Social Media Revolution | Unsettling or Reassuring?
Central to the message of this video is that technology has radically changed the way people are brought together. The technological phenomenon is called Media Convergence, and the actual way it has changed our society has an ironic quality.
The irony is that new technology with all it’s apps, widgets, and social networks, causes us to communicate in a fashion that is reminiscent of the days before electricity. Specifically, when you perceive a need your first impulse is to find someone in your tribe that you trust to meet that need. Note the two important elements of that equation…a) someone in your tribe, b) someone you trust.
If they’re not in your tribe they won’t find you when they need you. Even if you are in their tribe, if they don’t trust you…or can’t find anyone who does, then you aren’t going to get their business.
From the personal to the professional, there is now a level of transparency that many find unsettling and reassuring…all at the same time. Its no wonder people are deeply conflicted about what their social media engagement strategy is going to be. The reality of media convergence is forcing us to get involved, take responsibility, to listen first and take action second. You no longer have to interrupt people to get their attention because they are looking for you. What you must do is show up (have a presence), be social (if you want to make friends…demonstrate friendship to others), and share your passion for what you do. That was a recipe for success in the glory days of old…the quality of that dynamic is coming back into style.
